KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Taco Bob’s raised about $7,000 on Wednesday for the family of a father and son from Mattawan who were among six killed during a shooting spree in Kalamazoo last month.
“Tacos for Tyler” benefitted the Smith family. Tyler Smith, 17, and Richard Smith, 53, were shot while at a car dealership in Kalamazoo.
Members of Tyler’s soccer program pitched in at the restaurants, which had lines at the counter a good part of the day.
The surviving victims remain on the road to recovery. Tiana Carruthers, 25, has gone on her Facebook page to thank everyone who has helped her since the shooting. She said she is slowly regaining strength in her arm and legs.
The family of 14-year-old Abigail Kopf said she the child has talked for the first time since she suffered a traumatic brain injury. She said “pig,” referring to her pet pig Hamlet.
The family says it gives them hope she will regain her ability to speak.
