KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Rep. Jon Hoadley, D-Kalamazoo, is proposing a bill that would prevent anyone who is named on the national “no-fly” list from buying a gun in Michigan.
Hoadley said it was a common-sense measure to add the National Terrorist Watch List to the records checked by Michigan State Police before a gun permit is issued.
Republicans defeated a similar proposal in the U.S. Senate, but New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, another Republican, signed a similar bill which is now in effect in his state.
Opponents say there are people on the no-fly list who don’t belong there, and their rights shouldn’t be violated.
National polling shows that 70 percent of the public favor the idea.
