KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — A student who refused to leave Phoenix High School on Wednesday morning apparently had a change of heart when Kalamazoo Public Safety arrived just after 10 a.m. and quickly left campus.
The arriving officer was advised by security personnel at the school on Oakland Drive that the student had what appeared to have something in his waistband.
When the officer approached, investigators said the student bolted, discarding a handgun as he ran.
They chased down the student several blocks away and took him into custody.
They recovered the gun and booked the 17-year-old into the Kalamazoo County Jail. He could face several charges when he is arraigned.
The teenager’s name has not been released.
