KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — The former president of the Sons of Malta motorcycle club has entered guilty pleas to felony embezzlement and being a felon in possession of a gun.
When the annual EZ Memorial Ride fundraiser came up short on funding, an investigation revealed misappropriated money spent by 55-year-old Joseph Weeks at local casinos and on utility bills. The money from the event goes to the foundation set up for the family of slain police officer Eric Zapata, who was shot in 2011.
Weeks is also being investigated for the poisoning death of his mother. Her body was exhumed and test results have been sent off the Michigan State Police crime lab for analysis.
