KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Kalamazoo Public Safety will be assigning the fire marshal to investigate a pair of fires in two separate homes within two blocks of each other that both started less than 48 minutes apart Saturday night.
The first broke out sometime before 8:00 p.m. A neighbor reported the blaze in the 600 block of Edwin Avenue on the east side of Kalamazoo. It took three hours to put out that fire, which caused significant damage to the structure, and a firefighter suffered minor injuries that were treated at the scene.
Arson investigators believe it may have started in a bedroom on the second floor.
The residents were not home at the time. The Red Cross is offering the family temporary shelter and clothing.
The second fire was reported in the 1600 block of Highland Street. First responders found flames coming from the roof of the home, which was being renovated at the time. The home was not occupied.
The fire was confined to the second floor and attic, but the home suffered significant damage.
Public Safety is requesting anyone with information about either fire to contact the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety at 337-8994 or Silent Observer at 343-2100.
