KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Students and faculty are mourning after a Mattawan High School student and his father were killed by gunfire in Kalamazoo.
Supt. Robin Buchler says 17-year-old Tyler Smith was beloved.
“He was a good kid with a ready smile,” Buckler said. “Very well liked, very involved.”
She says help will be supplied until the healing process is complete.
“We know it’s not a one-day healing process,” Buckler said.
Smith and his father, 53-year-old Richard Smith, were gunned down at a car dealership during a series of shootings Saturday that left six dead and two seriously wounded.
A candlelight vigil to honor the memories of the father and son is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the district’s soccer field.
