LANSING (WKZO-AM) — A new bill that would make it more difficult for animal abusers to get new pets is working its way through the legislature, but it’s not clear if it would actually prevent an abuser, a puppy mill operator or someone breeding dogs for fighting from obtaining animals.
“Logan’s Law” creates a database that lists the names of Michiganders who have been convicted of animal abuse for five years after their conviction. An animal shelter would have to check that list and turn away anyone who appears on it.
But it does not apply to private dealers, breeders or any shelter out of state.
Ten dogs were seized from the home of Kelvin Thomas this week, a man with a prior dogfighting conviction. He was not permitted to own a dog for two years as a condition of his probation, but that prohibition expired.
Thomas has not yet been charged with any crime this time.
