KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office has trained five deputies to carry out some of the agency’s most-difficult work.
Sheriff Richard Fuller said the department’s new victim’s service unit will be delivering bad news to the families of victims. They will also help console survivors at fires, crashes and crime scenes.
“We do up to 40 death notifications a year and this team will be utilized for this,” Fuller said.
He said they’ve had a unit for some time that consoles sheriff’s deputies, EMS workers and firefighters after particularly rough assignments.
“We like that program so well and it’s done such good work in our community that we sought one for our citizens,” Fuller said.
The members of the VSU have undergone special training and counseling on the most-effective ways to deliver devastating and life-changing news.
