CASS COUNTY (WKZO-AM) — One man is dead and five others have been hospitalized after carbon monoxide filled a home on Indigan Lane in Cass County’s Jefferson Township late Thursday.
They believe a faulty heating system for an enclosed pool was the source of the deadly gas.
Police responded when a member of the family managed to get to a phone saying she felt dizzy, ill, short of breath and faint. She also told dispatchers that she needed an ambulance.
They found two parents and their five children, all members of the Hammang family, suffering from symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning.
They also found the children’s uncle dead in the basement. Andrew Weston, 43, had been sleeping in a room that was next to the faulty heating system.
The family’s dog was also rescued and taken to a local vet for treatment and boarding until the family recovers.
