UNDATED (WKZO-AM) — A political science professor at Western Michigan University says the Iowa caucuses are a toss-up for Republicans and Democrats, with contested races in both parties.
The polls have shown Donald Trump and Ted Cruz swapping leads in the Republican race in Iowa. It has also tightened up between Democrats Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton.
Prof. Peter Wielhouwer said no one guessed Trump would hang on this long.
“It’s really remarkable the way he has dominated the Republican field,” Wielhouwer said. “Bernie Sanders has also been a surprise.”
He said the strength of both Trump and Sanders says one thing: There are a lot of unhappy voters looking for alternatives.
“They’re expressing frustration and anger at a system that’s seemingly leaving them behind,” Wielhouwer said.
The caucuses are notorious for their unpredictable nature, due in part to chronically low turnouts and residents who lie to pollsters.
