LANSING (WKZO-AM) — Attorney General Bill Schuette says a survey of law enforcement agencies outside the Detroit and Wayne County areas found over 1,800 untested sexual assault kits.
Several were discovered in Kalamazoo and Calhoun counties. The Battle Creek Police Department had 239 in storage, Kalamazoo Public Safety had 113, and 40 were left untested by police at Western Michigan University.
Schuette says his office and Michigan State Police will soon chip away at that backlog, and arrests may follow.
He ordered the probe last September after thousands of untested kits were discovered in an abandoned lab in Detroit.
A $1.7 million appropriation by the legislature and grants awarded to MSP will help pay testing costs.
