BATTLE CREEK (WKZO-AM) — Officials in Battle Creek are proceeding with plans to create a three-mile railroad quiet zone in their downtown, in an effort to improve the quality of life in the city.
The proposal would mean closing three crossings and banning engine horns downtown. The horn lets drivers and pedestrians know that a train is coming. To ensure safety, new crossings will have to be installed in the zone.
The crossings at Fountain, Division and Spencer streets would be closed.
The total cost for the project is set at $3.5 million. A public hearing to close the crossings and a vote will be on the Battle Creek City Commission agenda next Tuesday.
