KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Forensic pathologists in Kalamazoo will examine the body of a 73-year-old woman who died three and a half years ago at her home, trying to find evidence that she was poisoned by her son.
Investigators assumed Evelyn Weeks died because of her age and medical history. No autopsy was done in 2002 after she was found dead in her home.
Court documents now allege her son, 55-year-old Joseph Weeks, stole drugs from an ambulance and made incriminating statements prior to his mother’s death. Homicide detectives had the woman’s body exhumed from a plot in North Carolina and returned it to Michigan for tests this week.
Joseph Weeks Jr. has not been charged, but is under investigation.
The suspect is the same Joseph Weeks Jr. who is currently charged with embezzling funds from an event that was held to raise money for a Kalamazoo Public Safety officer killed in the line of duty. A trial in that case is set for March 1.
Normally, it can take several weeks or months to get toxicology tests results.
