ST. IGNACE (WKZO-AM) — The Mackinac Bridge had to be closed for the eighth time in the last two decades on Saturday because motorists making the crossing were being bombarded by falling ice from the bridge’s towers and its web of cables.
Some of the ice was falling from a height of 300 feet, carrying quite a whollop when it struck the driving lanes.
Mackinac Bridge Authority Executive Bob Sweeney said they could not take the risk of the ice hitting a vehicle or the drivers inside.
It was closed for several hours before the rare combination of ice, wind and gravity stopped being a problem.
