ALLEGAN COUNTY (WKZO-AM) — It has been 28 years since, according to police, Junior Fred Blackston shot Charles Miller in the head because of a drug debt, pushing his body into a shallow, four-foot grave that was dug in a Casco Township marijuana field.
Now a second man, who had been a suspect all along, has been arrested and may also be tried for his role in Miller’s death.
Court documents say Guy Simpson, 49, was at the murder scene when the shooting occurred, saying he knew it was going to happen and did nothing to stop it.
Simpson testified at the first trial, pointing the finger at Blackston, but was never prosecuted.
Michigan State Police say Simpson was surprised when police arrested him on Thursday. He is being held for open murder, felony firearms and conspiracy to murder.
After the first trial, Simpson recanted his story and did not testify at Blackston’s second trial.
Blackston has been appealing his conviction ever since, and just recently won a retrial. That too is being appealed.
