CONSTANTINE (WKZO-AM) — Residents of Constantine are fighting back against a proposal to symbolically ban assault weapons in their village.
Constantine Village Council President Patricia Weiss said she wanted to start a conversation about assault rifles after sharing a New York Times article on a proposed ban with other council members.
She has gotten her wish about starting a conversation, but it may not have been the discussion she expected or desired. On Monday, about two-dozen residents appeared at a village board meeting to oppose the idea.
They also criticized Weiss for even suggesting the ban.
Michigan law prevents local governments from enacting any gun rules that more restrictive than state law.
