KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Kalamazoo County Sheriff Rick Fuller says his deputies will, over time, be sporting body cameras, but it will take a while to get all the pieces in place, including funding to buy the equipment.
He said, eventually, most departments will adopt the devices.
“The prices are coming down and they’re being seen as a significant tool to help all of the operations of law enforcement,” Fuller said.
Right now, he said it will be late this year or early next year before they his department be able to get all the devices it will need, including manpower to handle all the Freedom of Information Act requests, extra computer storage space for all that video and policies on how and when to let the cameras roll.
Kalamazoo Public Safety began thinking about how to add body cameras to their standard uniforms a year ago. KPS Chief Jeff Hadley said it will be a few more months before they have a policy in place, the money to pay for the technology and bids from vendors.
