KALAMAZOO (WKZO) — The Department of Public Safety has some critical program changes coming this year.
Yesterday officers underwent a Justice Training program that they hope will improve community relations.
Last night at a city Budget workshop, Chief Jeff Hadley informed Commissioners that he plans on introducing body cams in the first quarter of this year.
He says they plan to order 170 units using money from the city budget, grants and one 50-thousand dollar donation from an anonymous source.
He says they plan to include the public in the development and distribution of their policy for using the cameras, and that may take some time.
Chief Hadley also informed Commissioners that later this year he plans to repeat the racial profiling study that stunned the department a few years ago.
They want to see if the policies they have enacted since have worked to reduce racial bias in traffic stops.
