CALHOUN COUNTY (WKZO) — A fast moving mobile home fire in Emmett Township has claimed the life of a 9-year-old girl and left her parents suffering from severe burns and smoke inhalation.
The fire was reported at 611 Westbrook Avenue just after 2 p.m. Sunday by a neighbor. By the time fire fighters arrived, the home was fully engulfed and it was no longer safe to send in fire rescue crews.
The girl’s body was found in the northeast corner of the structure after the flames had been doused.
Because a death is involved, fire investigators are treating it as suspicious, but they say there is no reason to believe there was foul play.
They are looking for the cause of the fire.
An autopsy will be conducted on the young victim at the Medical Examiner’s office at the Homer Stryker Medical School in Kalamazoo Monday.
No names have been released.
