KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — The Metro Connect door-to-door public transit service will begin providing county-wide Sunday service in about a month.
The Kalamazoo City Commission approved the plans Monday.
Linda Teeter, the transportation authority chairperson, says it’s the first of several system upgrades promised before voters approved millage requests last year.
“This is really one of the first steps that you’ll see, the physical service being changed and enhanced,” Teeter said.
They plan to begin Metro Transit service on Sunday and extended hours during the week for the city’s line-haul system on July 1.
Vice Mayor Don Cooney says it will be a welcome addition for many who rely on mass transit.
“What a difference it’s going to make for people’s opportunity to get to church, to get to stores, to get to visit families,” Cooney said.
Kalamazoo City Commissioners approved contract amendments for the smaller service for the disabled and elderly last night.
The millage passed last year, but they won’t actually begin collecting the revenue to fund the new services until this year.
