KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — A compensation committee is recommending that city commissioners in Kalamazoo get a one percent hike in their paychecks.
Under the byzantine rules set up by the state to award raises to elected officials, the Commission would have to vote two-thirds to reject the raise proposal within a month, or it takes effect automatically.
Being a commissioner is not something one does for the money. They make about $7,000 a year doing the job. The mayor makes less than $10,000.
The raise is on their agenda for this evening. If the raises take effect, the net impact on the city budget would be just over $500.
