OSHTEMO (WKZO-AM) — Under the threat of losing much of their police protection after New Year’s Eve, Oshtemo Township officials have agreed to a county board ultimatum to renew their police contract with the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department.
The deal is for eight deputies for another year. Township officials still hope to negotiate alterations to the deal for services that aren’t currently provided by the county.
The vote was 5-1.
Sheriff Richard Fuller says weekly meetings are planned with township officials to work on their issues and improve communications. “The important part is, we’ll be able to continue into next year,” Fuller said.
There will be negotiations, but commissioners are insisting that, if Oshtemo wants additional services, they should pay extra for them.
