KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Ground zero was Drake Road and West Main for birdwatchers on Saturday, who participated in the annual Kalamazoo bird count.
The National Audobon Society promotes the annual counts around late December nationwide. This was the 67th year the count was conducted in Kalamazoo in a 15-mile circle, using the west side intersection as the center point.
The census produces valuable information over time that helps with the conservation of birds.
This year’s count in Kalamazoo, and in most of of the state, is being skewed by the late arrival of winter and may result in reports of some birds that don’t normally appear in the winter count and others in greater numbers.
Some area counts were conducted before Christmas.
Three more day-long counts are planned for the New Year’s Eve weekend. They will be staged in Coloma on Thursday, Barry County on Friday and Gobles on Sunday.
