PORTAGE (WKZO-AM) — Police detectives will be meeting with Michigan State Police on Saturday to determine if a crew of three men who were spotted breaking into unlocked cars in the 9300 block of Chapel Street in Portage early Christmas morning are the same group that have been pilfering things out of unlocked cars in Mattawan and Lawton for the past week.
They captured two of the three thieves after a neighbor reported a stranger breaking into a vehicle at about 4:30 a.m. The third fled into the Gourdneck State Game Area and disappeared.
If it’s the same group, they may be responsible for over four dozen auto burglaries.
Police recovered a van they believe belonged to the thieves, and recovered a substantial amount of stolen property.
Two suspected thieves spent their Christmas in the Kalamazoo County Jail.
