WASHINGTON, D.C. (WKZO-AM) — Michigan’s U.S. senators are applauding $1 billion allocated in the federal budget to improve the Great Lakes.
Sen. Debbie Stabenow says $300 million of that will go toward the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.
“(It) focuses on water quality issues, invasive species, the algae blooms in Lake Erie, and the other challenges we see in the lakes,” Stabenow said.
She also says $1.25 billion has been set aside for dredging in harbors.
The bill also encourages engineering for projects that aim to block the spread of Asian carp, which ecologists fear could threaten a $23 billion sport fishing industry by endangering Great Lakes whitefish and walleye populations.
