WASHINGTON, D.C. (WKZO-AM) — Legislation calling for enhanced oil pipeline safety in the Great Lakes region has left a U.S. Senate committee with unanimous support.
Sen. Gary Peters was inspired to reintroduce the bill after the Enbridge pipeline break in 2010, which poured 800,000 gallons of crude into the Kalamazoo River.
“We certainly know about that in Michigan more than most places,” Peters said.
The Democrat says the legislation would require the most-rigorous federal scrutiny for the region’s pipelines, including the ones that travel through the lower and upper peninsulas of the state.
The bill also requires a study of aging lines, like the 62-year-old Enbridge line under the Straits of Mackinac.
