BATTLE CREEK (WKZO-AM) — Binder Park Zoo in Battle Creek says it supports legislation introduced Thursday that would let the facility breed large endangered carnivores.
President Diane Thompson said the bill would also give the same designation to accredited zoos in Detroit, Lansing, Saginaw and Grand Rapids.
“I’ve been here for three-and-a-half years, and I’ve been working on that since I’ve been here,” Thompson said.
If the bill is signed, Thompson said the zoo would likely lobby to breed snow leopards. However, she also said the overall plan is still being developed.
“As soon as this gets signed, we will put in motion getting the animals needed for breeding,” Thompson said.
State Sen. Mike Nofs, R-Battle Creek, co-sponsored the legislation, which currently sits in committee.
