LANSING (WKZO-AM) — Legislation to allow five zoos in Michigan to breed large carnivores has been introduced in the Senate.
The Binder Park Zoo in Battle Creek and the John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids are facilities listed in the bill that would be able to breed lions, tigers, cheetahs, leopards, jaguars, polar bears, black and brown bears, and grizzly bears.
Breeding is currently banned due to inhumane practices of some small roadside attractions.
Other institutions may the animals if they comply with public safety, animal welfare, veterinary care and conservation baselines.
