KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Kalamazoo Central High School alumnus and future baseball hall-of-famer Derek Jeter spent Thursday in Kalamazoo visiting old haunts and spending time with children.
He shook hands and met the families of every child receiving treatment at Bronson Children’s Hospital early Thursday.
“It’s always somewhat difficult when you go, but to meet kids and their parents and their families — that’s what it’s all about,” Jeter said.
That night, he teamed with Santa and surprised 150 children at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Kalamazoo at its location on Lake Street, handing out backpacks filled with items donated by the New York Yankees and other sponsors.
“It has nothing to do with me,” Jeter said. “It has to do with Santa and the elves, and the opportunity they have to get gifts.”
“A lot of them are so young they probably don’t know who I am,” Jeter said.
Jeter said the events were organized by Jeter’s Leaders, a special group of high school children who are encouraged to excel academically, avoid drugs and alcohol, achieve and lead. That program is celebrating its 20th year.
