LANSING (WKZO-AM) — A bill that would protect teens from prosecution if they seek medical assistance for themselves or someone else after an overdose of prescription drugs has been unanimously approved by the Senate.
The bill, sponsored by Al Pscholka, R-Stevensville, was inspired by Watervliet teenager Mason Mizwicki, who died because his friends feared for their own futures. “Mason was an honor student, a 3.95 grade point and a sophomore starter on the football team,” Pscholka said.
Pscholka says the protection would be limited.
“(It makes sure) drug dealers can’t use this clause,” Pscholka said. “The bill also does not allow an individual to avoid prosecution for another criminal charge if they’re doing something else wrong.”
It passed unanimously in the House last month and now heads for the governor’s desk.
