WASHINGTON (WKZO-AM) — Congressman Fred Upton says the U.S. House has passed a federal ban on microbeads in soaps, cosmetics and toothpaste.
The St. Joseph Republican says the legislation was approved Monday.
“The Senate looks like they may be prepared to take it by unanimous consent and maybe even pass it in the next couple of days,” Upton said. “I don’t expect any opposition in the White House.”
He drafted the bill after Illinois signed a similar prohibition.
“We work with the industry, they said they can make these products without microbeads in them, and we need to stop making them and get them of the shelf,” Upton said.
Upton says the scrubbing particles soak up contaminants and slip through sieves at water treatment plants. Fish then mistake the flecks as food.
