KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — The San Bernardino, Calif., mass killings have, once again, sparked the debate over whether there should be tighter restrictions on gun ownership.
Two professors from the Western Michigan University Cooley Law School were already scheduled to debate the issue of guns in schools Wednesday night.
Steve Dulan says the last thing a mass murderer wants to find is someone else with a gun.
“All you do is disarm the law-abiding citizen who might otherwise be armed,” Dulan said.
But David Tarrien says more guns means more gun accidents. He said let the professionals handle the relatively rare live-shooter incidents.
“The idea that schools need more guns strikes me like a feed needing more bicycles,” Tarrien said.
Michigan courts and lawmakers are currently grappling with the issue of banning guns in schools.
Just this week, the courts upheld the right of universities in Michigan to ban guns because of their special constitutional right to autonomy. That right would not apply to public schools.
