KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — The Kalamazoo County Clerk’s Office has come out against legislation that would eliminate straight-ticket voting in Michigan.
Clerk Tim Snow said the ban would make it more difficult for his staff to count votes after an election. He also said voters would feel the strain at polling places, too.
“The lines in the precincts will become very, very long, because it will take people much longer to vote their ballot,” Snow said.
He also said much of the Kalamazoo County electorate, to the tune of about 45 percent, prefers the practice.
Republicans say the legislation would force voters to be informed before filling out their ballots. Opponents say the prohibition would deter Democrats from the polls, who tend to vote straight-ticket in higher numbers.
