BATTLE CREEK (WKZO-AM) — A fire at an apartment building in Battle Creek has displaced nine tenants.
It was reported at about 5 a.m. Saturday. Fire investigators have yet to figure out a cause of the blaze, which was contained to one unit.
Most of the other units at the converted home on Calhoun Street east of Chestnut suffered smoke damage.
There were also injuries. One female tenant suffered cuts to her hand trying to break out windows to rescue her cats, while another was taken on a gurney from the scene because of a chronic illness.
The Red Cross was at the scene to offer temporary shelter and other assistance.
