BATTLE CREEK (WKZO-AM) — A man and a woman on a rescue mission to help out a friend with a car stalled along Interstate 94 are in the hospital after their SUV was struck by a semi near Beckley Road in Battle Creek.
It happened at around 11 a.m. Tuesday.
The victims, 25-year-old Abby Frantz of East Leroy and 27-year-old Austin Cable of Battle Creek, didn’t see their friend until the last minute. They changed freeway lanes into the path of the semi, which struck the vehicle on its passenger side, pushing it down the pavement roughly 75 yards.
They were airlifted from the highway to Bronson Methodist Hosptial in Kalamazoo by helicopter in critical condition, but have since been upgraded to serious condition.
The driver of the semi was not cited.
The wreck shut down the freeway. It was reopened by 1 p.m.
