COLUMBUS, OHIO (WKZO-AM) — Michigan State now controls its own destiny in the hunt for the Big Ten title and could still earn their way into playoff contention after stunning Ohio State in Columbus on Saturday 17-14.
The crippled Spartan offense, with starting quarterback Connor Cook sidelined with a sore shoulder, scored just enough to win, while Michigan State’s defense held the Buckeyes to a record-low 132 total yards.
It snapped Ohio State’s 23-game winning streak.
It all came down to Spartan kicker Michael Geiger, who drilled the game-winning 41-yard field goal on the final play, giving them the victory.
The Spartans now just have to beat Penn State Saturday for a ticket to the Big Ten Championship and a likely matchup with Iowa.
There is still a chance that they could make it into the collegiate playoffs, after knocking off No. 3 Ohio State. A big shake-up is expected when the standings are released on Tuesday.
The University of Michigan knocked off Penn State 28-16 in State College, Penn. Jake Rudock threw two touchdowns, and the Wolverines ran for the other two
They will spend their Thanksgiving week preparing for their big annual rivalry game against Ohio State.
