KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — At a time when Kalamazoo needs all the tax-base it can get, the owner of its most-iconic home has declared non-profit status for the Henderson Castle, handing over ownership to a 501(c)(3) foundation.
Francois Moyet says it was necessary to afford upkeep of the facility.
City officials say it may give him relief from state and federal taxes, but he will not likely have local property taxes waived unless he turns the building into a homeless shelter and free meal center.
That isn’t his plan.
He says he will continue to use the historic home as a French restaurant and a bed and breakfast.
