JACKSON (WKZO-AM) — Consumers Energy says phone scammers posing as the utility have cheated people out of $81,000 this year.
They joined with Michigan State Police and the Better Business Bureau at a Lansing news conference to combat the thieves the only way they can, by exposing their game.
Annette Gardiner, the vice president of the company, says they would never demand pre-paid cards to pay off a power bill.
“There are different methods, but we would make multiple contacts with the customer before shutting them off,” Gardiner said.
They say 96 businesses and individuals in Kalamazoo County were scammed out of over $16,000.
