BATTLE CREEK (WKZO-AM) — The Battle Creek City Commission has approved changes to its code of ethics.
They’re hoping the alterations provide clarity on subpoena powers and attorney presence at hearings on ethical infractions.
The language now discourages commissioners from issuing subpoenas to compel witness testimony. It also allows the subject of the hearing to have an attorney present, though lawyers still cannot actively participate in the proceedings on behalf of their client.
The catalyst for change came after former commissioner Jeff Domenico stormed out of his hearing in June, shouting claims about Open Meetings Act violations and being disallowed counsel.
Domenico got into hot water after slamming the Battle Creek Police Department on Facebook.
