GRAND RAPIDS (WKZO-AM) — The new Speaker of the U.S. House was in west Michigan on Monday.
Paul Ryan, R-Wisconsin, spoke at a private fundraiser in Grand Rapids for the National Republican Congressional Committee.
This was an appearance scheduled before he succeeded John Boehner as the third-in-line man for the presidency two weeks ago.
As for whether Ryan could be drafted by the GOP for a 2016 White House run if the current crop of 14 hopefuls are found wanting, fellow Congressman Bill Huizenga of Zeeland feels that timing is not right.
“He had people asking him to run from the great job that he did as a vice presidential candidate, but he had decided to return to the House,” Huizenga said. “I don’t think he’d do that, but I certainly would encourage him in the future. I’d be the first one to sign up on-board, because I think he’d be that good.”
Ryan made his way into and out of Calder City without speaking to reporters.
