VAN BUREN COUNTY (WKZO-AM) — The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department is thanking homeowners in the Sister Lakes area for all their calls and assistance in helping them track down a drunken and abusive male who beat up a female acquaintance in the 66000 block of Oak Street Friday night.
The man is spending the weekend in the Van Buren County Jail pending arraignment.
Deputies got a 911 call from a 34-year-old woman screaming for help because she was being punched in the face.
They arrived at the scene and found the woman with facial injuries and learned the man had just fled the home on foot, drunk and carrying a claw hammer.
The suspect spent the next few hours banging on the doors of strangers, trying to get someone to let him in.
They all refused and many of them called police soon after.
That’s how they were able to track the suspect and eventually take him into custody.
The 37-year-old suspect had a blood alcohol count that was well over twice the legal limit at .22.
He is also being held for domestic abuse, third offense, resisting officers and for violating parole.
