BATTLE CREEK (WKZO-AM) — A man with a history of violent behavior directed at police is now being held for allegedly shooting a Battle Creek businessman during a robbery Sunday.
Markesse Irby, 21, was formally charged with six felonies, including attempted murder, armed robbery and four gun felonies.
Irby was arrested after police found 33-year-old Nayef Mohsen Ali-Saeed suffering from a head wound outside his convenience store on Post Avenue in Battle Creek. Ali-Saeed remains in critical but stable condition at the intensive trauma care unit at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo.
Irby denied the charges at the hearing. His bail was set at $750,000.
Irby, who has three previous convictions for resisting police, could be tried as a habitual offender and get up to life in prison if convicted on the charges he now faces.
