GRAND RAPIDS (WKZO-AM) — A west Michigan man who has been in and out of prison because police once said he was “addicted to burglaries” could be going to prison for the rest of his life for allegedly committing murder.
Donald Spice has been formally charged with the death of his girlfriend, Laurie Vargas, and has been ordered held without bond.
Janet Mays, Spice’s mother, said she can’t figure out why he would do such a thing.
“I can’t imagine a reason why he would do this at all,” Mays said. “They were breaking up. I know she didn’t want to break up, but I can’t see him doing this to break up with her.”
During his criminal career, he was suspected in hundreds of burglaries in west Michigan. He also served multiple prison terms.
Spice had reportedly confessed to killing Vargas in Grand Rapids, then driving her body in her car to Ottawa County and setting the car on fire to cover up the killing.
