BATTLE CREEK (WKZO-AM) — Battle Creek police are holding an ex-con they say is responsible for an armed robbery that left the victim with a bullet wound to the head.
The victim was apparently confronted by the 21-year-old suspect as he was about to open the M&S Food Market at Post Avenue and Illinois Street at around 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
Police responding to a report of shots fired found the 33-year-old victim on the pavement behind his van. He is listed in critical condition at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo.
The suspect fled west on foot and was tracked down several blocks away and taken into custody. They recovered a nine-millimeter pistol near the spot where he was arrested.
Ammunition, cash and heroin were found in his possession. His handgun was stolen, investigator said.
The suspect has a history of violent crimes and is expected to be formally charged Tuesday.
