LANSING (WKZO-AM) — A package of bills has been introduced to increase penalties against people who physically or mentally abuse the elderly.
The aim is to better protect those who cannot protect them-selves according to Rep. John Bizon, R-Battle Creek, who is sponsoring one of the bills.
“I think there are only certain things that government needs to do, but watching out for our seniors, or watching out for those who cannot watch out for themselves, becomes very, very important,” Bizon said.
His bill would increase the maximum penalty for second degree abuse from four years to 10 years. Another bill in the package would increase the penalty for first degree abuse from 15 to 20 years.
The legislation has been assigned to the criminal justice committee.
