KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — The Kalamazoo County Commission has wasted no time getting a first-of-its-kind housing program off and running, approving a mill levy that will be placed on December property tax bills.
Voters approved the tax on election day and the commission approved the one-tenth mill increase Wednesday night.
The vote was unanimous, however, some commissioners were against it from the beginning. Dale Shugars opposed it from the beginning.
“The people have spoken and I’m going to vote for this,” Shugars said.
The housing program will subsidize homeless families that have some income, giving them enough to rent an apartment, and also give them the training and assistance they need to become self-sufficient after a year. Then, the subsidy ends.
The goal is to give children a place to live.
