PORTAGE (WKZO-AM) — A referendum to decriminalize small amounts of marijuana in Portage passed, by only a small margin.
The final vote was 5,500-5,361.
However, the new law won’t change much if you want to light up in the city. Portage city officials say, as long as the state outlaws even small amounts of marijuana, it will trump the local city action.
Mayor Pete Strazdas said last week he was concerned about the code, saying it would create enforcement problems and confusion among Portage residents.
But passage does send a message to Lansing, Strazdas said, that Michigan residents are interested in legalizing the drug.
