KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — An electrical malfunction in a reclining love seat is being blamed for a fire that destroyed an entire building at the Country Meadow Apartment complex just over a week ago.
Kalamazoo Township Fire Marshal Todd Kowalski said the loveseat was on a first floor apartment. The fire spread to the attic, and, from there, it moved laterally across the top of the building, which was only partially occupied because of a previous unrelated fire.
One occupant and a firefighter suffered minor injuries. One tenant had to be rescued from a second story balcony.
The structure off Gull Road on the east side of the metropolitan area is being called a total loss.
