PORTAGE (WKZO-AM) — Voters in the Portage School District are being asked to approve a millage for school improvements.
This time, the plan is to build two new middle schools and install new swimming pools at both high schools. A second question would resolve a decades-old debate in Portage, whether both high schools should have their own outdoor football stadiums.
Supt. Mark Beilang says they spent months with community groups and parents refining the proposals and coming up with the $144 million questions.
“If both proposals pass, the millage rate would increase by 1.55 mills,” Bielang said, working out to about $10 a month or $120 per year for the typical Portage homeowner.
“The stadium proposal is roughly $1 of that $10,” Bielang said.
It followed a bond issue that replaced Portage Central High School and remodeled Portage Northern High School a few years ago.
