KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Mayor Bobby Hopewell says he’s running for mayor again because he still wants to make Kalamazoo a better place.
“This job is always about giving back being a part of how to move our community forward,” Hopewell said. “Not perfectly — I will never be a perfect mayor, and I don’t think our city commission will ever be a perfect commission, but we’re working hard every single day.”
Hopewell says, if re-elected to a fifth term Tuesday, he’ll find a way to close the city’s projected $2.9 million shortfall in 2016.
The incumbent is running against non-profit operator Kris Mbah, who has recommended the city sell off unneeded properties to make up the gap.
It’s the city’s first mayoral election in nearly a century.
